Broken Bells – The High Road

“When Danger Mouse and the Shins’ James Mercer met backstage at Denmark’s Roskilde festival five years ago, the unlikely duo quickly discovered a mutual fandom. “As soon as I heard the Shins, I wanted to do something with James, no matter what,” Danger Mouse explains. Their partnership took time to develop, but in March 2008, Mercer began a peripatetic recording odyssey, sequestering for weeks on end at Danger Mouse’s Los Angeles home studio. Both were coming off of a series of high-profile, high-pressure undertakings — Danger Mouse had recently finished producing Beck’s Modern Guilt, while Mercer was coming off a controversial, radical reshuffle of the Shins’ lineup. As a result, they covertly began making music that resembled nothing either of them had ever done.

The result is Broken Bells, what was until now a top-secret collaboration. Maverick musician/studio maven Danger Mouse (a.k.a. Brian Burton) explains this latest effort is no one-off art project like Dark Night of the Soul, his much-hyped joint endeavor with Sparklehorse and film director David Lynch from earlier this year. And while he’s well known for producing the likes of Gorillaz, he claims it’s not a Shins album as produced by Danger Mouse; nor is it a trading-computer-files creation à la Gnarls Barkley, his acclaimed partnership with Cee-Lo. Nope, both Danger Mouse and Mercer agree that Broken Bells is, in fact, a band. “We just didn’t get anybody else in it but ourselves,” explains Danger Mouse. “We’d never worked together before, but then we did one song and it was great.” – Rolling Stone

The self-titled album is in stores on March 9, 2010.

“A Chorus of Storytellers was recorded by Ryan Hadlock in the frosty month of February 2009 at Bear Creek Studio just outside of Seattle. It was mixed in the decidedly warmer month of June in Reykjavik, Iceland by Birgir Jon Birgisson. Those paying attention will notice that this is nearly the same way their last album Into the Blue Again was recorded. There is, however, one fundamental difference between this and every other album The Album Leaf has ever recorded. For the first time in five albums, The Album Leaf recorded as a whole band. In the past, almost every instrument was performed by principal songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jimmy LaValle. This time the whole band was invited to participate and the result is their best record yet.” – Sub Pop Records

Terry Poison – Comme Ci Comme Ca (The Twelves Remix Version 2)

“Without a doubt The Twelves are one of the best production duos to have emerged from the blogs, their breakthrough came in July of 2007 when they remixed the track “Boyz” from M.I.A’s sophomore album, Kala. The reworked track with an added club feel resulted in one of the most talked about remixes of 2007. The blog coverage surrounding the remix was extensive and eventually the track started to appear in sets from high profile djs around the world, including Kissy Sell Out, who played it on BBC’s “In New Djs We Trust” series.

The duo followed “Boyz” with equally well received remixes for Asobi Seksu and Erlend Oye, both of which featured on a number of blogs and music related sites. This caught the attention of a number of labels, including Modular Records who commissioned a “Twelves Remix” of the song “Get Lucky” by New Young Pony Club.

This year has been a very successful one for The Twelves, they were most recently commissioned to remix big name tracks such as La Roux’s “In For The Kill”, A-Ha’s “Take On Me”, Groove Armada’s “Drop the Tough” and Metric’s “Help I’m Alive”. They also did a mini-mix for the BBC Radio 1 show, Annie Mac’s Mash-up, it was so well received that they have been invited back to do another one at some point in the year.” – MYSPACE

One of my favourite concerts was Midlakes “The Trials of Van Occupanther” in the year 2006. It´s fascinating how they bundle all the emotion in their music. Don´t miss their shows if you have the chance!
