In “Hombre Sencillo”, the new seven-minute video from directors Britt Govea and Brian Ziffer, the man known as Bonnie “Prince” Billy plays a wandering guitarist who wakes up one day with the power to turn pretty girls from black-and-white into color by giving them roses. He does well for himself. The song in the video is a cover of Graham Nash’s “Simple Man” (renamed “Hombre Sencillo”), taken from the forthcoming Nash tribute album Be Yourself: A Tribute to Graham Nash’s Songs for Beginners, which is out May 25 on Grass Roots. Shannon Stephens – Catch The Morning Line

“Asthmatic Kitty is proud to announce the re-press of Shannon Stephens’ self-titled debut (2000). Produced by Stephens and her former Marzuki band-mates Sufjan Stevens and Matt Haseltine in 2000, this superb collection of Shannon’s own songs includes contributions by Marzuki cellist Jamie Kempkers, Kenny Hutson (Vigilantes of Love) on pedal steel guitar, Mews and Mews Too contributors Roman Bolks and Jason Brouwer, and folk mainstay Jason Harrod. With new artwork and two previously unreleased bonus tracks, this release will delight newcomers and faithful fans. After Marzuki disbanded, Shannon began to play local venues on her own. She released her self-titled debut LP in 2000, the same year she moved to Seattle and shared the stage with the likes of Denison Witmer, Rose Thomas, Jason Harrod and Damien Jurado. In 2008, one of her songs (“I’ll Be Glad”) was covered by Will Oldham (aka Bonnie “Prince” Billy) on his album Lie Down In The Light. “Swahili Blonde began with Nicole Turley (ex-WEAVE! drummer & vocalist) sitting in a little room amidst a bunch of instruments and recording equipment she didn’t know how to use. After many long nights, she still didn’t completely understand how everything worked, but was happy with the unconventional sounds and compositions she was able to make. She ended up being so happy with the result of her efforts, that she decided to record and release a collection of songs for a full-length album, humorously called Man Meat.
